POETIC

Poetry and high art have long been held up as the pinnacle of culture. Poetry and craft; not so much. In this exhibition Cox takes poems and uses craft-based techniques such as embroidery to show how these forms of ‘low’ art can just as easily reflect the imagery and ideas of poetry.

Upon the passing of her great-aunt, Cox inherited a series of 1950s era aprons. Each was so appealing visually, and also inspired a series of poems by Cox that relate to the aprons and to her great-aunt who owned them.

Fragments of William Blake’s poems are combined with postcards of paintings of a similar era. Each postcard and poem correspond to a different season of the year: spring is bright and green and winter filled with sombre shades of browns.
